"Although annuities may result in lower monthly payments than your pension, there is an upside. 'Many insurance companies offer inflation protection riders that will give you cost-of-living adjustments over time,' says Setzfand."

Taxation Of Investment Income In 2013 With Historical Perspective

Seeking Alpha

By Richard Shaw

"There is also talk of reducing or eliminating the tax free buildup of cash values in whole life insurance (which includes deferred annuities). That would change the relative value of life insurance companies that are term insurance heavy versus those that are whole life heavy, and would change the relative appeal of variable and fixed deferred annuities as retirement asset accumulation vehicles."

What Retirees Can Expect After The Election

Forbes

By Robert Laura

November 4, 2012

"If the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire, tax rates on investment income will change and retirees may want to shift their fixed income strategy to more tax efficient investments.   Tax free municipal bonds, or even tax deferred, fixed annuities, may be more tax friendly than corporate bonds and taxable CDs."

Answer isn't simple for an annuity strategy

Chicago Tribune

By Janet Kidd Stewart

November 2, 2012

"If this is more of an investment vehicle, you'll probably get a higher rate of return with a deferred annuity, or by splitting the pot and putting some into an immediate fixed-term annuity and letting the rest grow in one or more deferred annuities, he said."

"When you're younger, you are able to ride the ups and downs in the market but as you grow closer to retirement, consider shifting strategies and perhaps advisors to those who specialize in retirement planning and income distribution planning. It may be a good time to rollover your 401(k) from the market to a fixed indexed annuity that will provide safety and growth. By adding an income rider, you will have income for life, even if the entire principal is deleted."

Dealing with the coming inflation threat

MarketWatch

"Types of alternative investments can legitimately include a host of assets from real estate, commodities, foreign currency or bonds, ETFs that take short positions, preferred or convertible stocks, private equity, and, in limited situations, equity indexed annuities. I am not going to go in-depth about equity-indexed annuities here, but because I know there is a lot of rhetoric about these products, I will say to be careful when considering one. These products are niche vehicles best used for intermediate-term income generation with the expectation of coming close to keeping up with inflation, but not matching or outperforming it."

Retirement Guys: Don't be overwhelmed by retirement income planning

"One solution to cover any additional income needs is to purchase the correct amount of life insurance. Life insurance can be a great option because the owner can change beneficiaries in the future, say to children, or cancel the insurance in the future if there is no longer a need. Another option to consider is annuity income guarantees. Options vary from company to company and from different products, such as fixed, indexed or variable."

Consumers Demand Indexed Annuities

California Broker Magazine Blog

"The insurance industry's efforts to combat the negative press on indexed annuities are becoming successful. Our hard work of publishing numerous factual articles on these products is paying off! Finally, consumers have some small way to research indexed annuities on their own. They have access to credible and reliable information, which allows them to make the best determination on whether or not indexed annuities are right for them."

An Overview of Investments

"Next in line, I would put fixed annuities. Fixed annuities are a contract between you and insurance company that provides a fixed or stated minimum return over the contract years. They are not FDIC insured and their safety is based on the financial strength of the insurance company that sells them. Typically, the higher rates are offered by insurance companies with lower financial ratings.  With interest rates at historic lows, fixed annuities are typically paying around 3%."

How to Increase Social Security Income on an After-Tax Basis

Arizona Society of CPAs Blog

November 2, 2012

"Income producing annuities get favorable tax treatment. They get to amortize tax basis over the life of the annuity payments on a straight line basis. That means very little of the cash flow is taxable because it is considered a return of principal. The deferred growth annuities grow without any current 1099 income."

What the "Smart Money" Does to Create Real Financial Freedom in These Turbulent Financial Times

Tony Robbins Business and Finance Blog

"Unfortunately Fixed Index Annuities are frequently confused with Variable Annuities, which is a product which is an insurance product that offers investment options. In addition to the market risk that comes along with Variable Annuities, they also have numerous fees such as administrative fees, mortality and expense charges, as well as the investment management fees charged by the underlying sub-accounts/mutual funds. We have identified 10 separate fees within a variable annuity that can average 2.5% to 4.5% annually. Unlike Variable Annuities and Mutual Funds, a Fixed Index Annuity does not deduct sales charges, management fees or 12b-1 marketing fees. A 2012 Barron's article explains, "In these (FIAs) and other fixed annuities, the pricing is built into the payout rates, so the only sound way to size them up is by comparing what you ultimately pocket if you go with one contract over another."

"Is there a way to find an annuity with the guarantees of the fixed rate and the upside of the variable?  Yes, the equity indexed annuity.  This is a form of the fixed annuity, which means you cannot ever lose any money, but with the added ability to gain based on growth of an index, for example the Standard and Poors 500."
